How to check your permesso di soggiorno status online (2026)

Checked against official sources · 24 October 2026

Quickest check: enter the 12-character assicurata number from your post office receipt at questure.poliziadistato.it/stranieri.

You sent your permesso kit at the post office and now you are waiting. There are two official places to check what is happening, and both use the receipt (ricevuta) the post office gave you. Keep that receipt safe: you need it for everything below.

Who this is for: non-EU citizens who applied for a first permesso, a renewal, an update, a conversion or a duplicate through the postal kit at a Sportello Amico post office. EU citizens do not need a permesso di soggiorno, so none of this applies to them. If you applied directly at the Questura (for example some asylum and protection cases), you can still use Method 1 with the 10-character pratica number the Questura gave you. Method 2 does not apply to you.

What to look for on your receipt

When you send the kit, the post office gives you a receipt. The official sources describe two sets of codes printed on it:

  • the assicurata number: the tracking number of the registered envelope your kit travelled in. It has 12 characters.
  • a user ID (Nome Utente) and a password: these are for the Portale Immigrazione login.

If the Questura already had a free slot when you were at the counter, you also got a separate sheet with the date, time and place of your Questura appointment. Keep it with the receipt.

Method 1: the Polizia di Stato status check

This is the quickest check and it tells you whether your card is ready.

  1. Go to questure.poliziadistato.it/stranieri (the page is available in Italian, English, Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic and Ukrainian).
  2. In the box "Numero pratica o assicurata" (in English: "File number or registered mail code"), type the 12-character assicurata number from your post office receipt. The 10-character pratica number is only for applications filed directly at the Questura.
  3. Press Invia.

No password is needed for this check.

What the answer means:

  • The card is ready. The Polizia di Stato says that when the permit is ready, the system also shows the name and address of the office where you collect it.
  • "Il documento di soggiorno non è presente in archivio." This means the system found no residence document under the number you typed. First check that you copied the number correctly. If you are sure it is right and the message does not change, ask the Poste helpline or your Questura (see below).
  • No collection office shown. Your card is not ready yet.

The same page states that, besides what you see online, you will receive an SMS with the day, time and place to collect your permit once it is ready.

Method 2: the Portale Immigrazione account

The Ministry of the Interior's Portale Immigrazione lets you follow your application using the user ID and password printed on your receipt.

  1. Go to portaleimmigrazione.it and choose Accedi, then the reserved access for non-EU citizens ("Accesso riservato cittadino extracomunitario"). The login page is at portaleimmigrazione.it/ELI2ImmigrazioneWEB/Pagine/StartPage.aspx.
  2. Type the user ID from your receipt in Nome Utente and the password from your receipt in Password.
  3. Press Conferma.

The portal describes this area as the place to view the status of the applications you submitted. The Questura di Bologna also notes that your Questura appointments can always be checked here with the codes on the postal receipt, which is useful if a letter gets lost.

The portal's FAQ adds a second option: you can take your receipt to an authorised Comune or Patronato office and they can check the progress of your file for you.

Getting SMS updates

There are two kinds of SMS mentioned by official sources:

  • Card ready. The Polizia di Stato sends an SMS with the day, time and place to collect your permit.
  • Questura appointment. On Portale Immigrazione there is a section called "Compilazione Dati Ricevuta". It is only for kits you filled in by hand. If you register there before going to the post office, you can also receive SMS messages for your convocazione in Questura, on the same mobile number you wrote in the kit. The registration lasts 15 days: if you do not go to the post office within that time, you have to register again.

Write a mobile number in your kit that you will keep using while you wait, since that is where these messages go.

If nothing changes for months

First, the legal timeline. Article 5 of the Testo Unico Immigrazione says a permit is issued, renewed or converted within 90 days of the application date, if the requirements are met. This was 60 days until the rules changed on 22 May 2026. Some official FAQ pages written before then still say 60 days. Keep in mind that this is the legal deadline. It does not tell you how long your own Questura will actually take.

If you are past that time, or your status has not moved for a long while:

  1. Check both systems. Use the Polizia di Stato check for a ready card and the Portale Immigrazione login for your application and any Questura appointment.
  2. Call the Poste contact centre: 800.200.309. It is free from landlines and mobiles, Monday to Saturday (not on public holidays), 8:00 to 20:00. Poste lists "information on the progress of applications" submitted at Sportello Amico among the things it can help with.
  3. Ask a Patronato or your Comune to look up your file with your receipt.
  4. Contact your Questura's Ufficio Immigrazione. Each Questura organises this differently, so check its page on questure.poliziadistato.it.
  5. Watch your post and email. If the Questura finds a problem, it can send you a formal notice before refusing the application (a preavviso di rigetto under article 10-bis of Law 241/1990) and ask for more documents. Reply within the time limit it gives you. If you receive one, this is a good moment to talk to a Patronato or an immigration lawyer.

While you wait, carry your receipt together with your passport. The Portale Immigrazione FAQ says the receipt has legal value and, together with your identity document, allows you to remain in Italy while you wait for your permit.
