Students, au pairs, elective-residence holders and some others can join Italy's health service (SSN) by paying a yearly contribution. Choose your case.
Rules that catch people out
- Calendar year only. Registration runs from 1 January to 31 December. It cannot be split or backdated: join in October and you pay the full year, then pay again in January.
- Students: the €700 rate usually requires a self-declaration that you have no income other than Italian public grants or scholarships. With other income, or with dependants, the general rule applies.
- No European health card. Voluntary registration does not give you the TEAM/EHIC card for trips to other EU countries.
- Pay by F24, Sezione Regioni, tax code 8846, with your region's code and the year covered. The health office usually gives you the codes.
